- Sleep apnoea & snoring solutions
The effects of disturbed sleep on the physical and emotional well being of your
patients is well documented;
• Daytime sleepiness
• Lack of energy
• Poor motivation
• Accidents relating to driving when tired
• High stress levels due to fatigue
• Reduced sex drive
• Less effectiveness at work
• Family members’ sleep disturbance and annoyance
The traditional ‘gold-standard’ treatment offered by respiratory
physicians using CPAP (continuous positive airway pressure), is very effective
but cumbersome, with face mask, piping and a noisy electric air-pump. Many
patients find their toleration of this system very limited, despite its efficacy.
The other treatment widely promoted elsewhere is laser surgery to the palate. This is very
variable in its effectiveness and commonly very painful in the first few days
afterwards.
The most appealing means of improving snoring or apnoea
is with the use of an intra-oral appliance which supports
the lower jaw position to help open the airway
in the throat. This device is called a ‘mandibular advancement splint’.
John Chadwick, Consultant
Orthodontist based at The Referral Clinic, a division of
The Dental Spa, is able to offer this service. After a
full clinical assessment,
a treatment plan for your patients can be developed to utilise the most appropriately
designed appliance for the mouth. It is essential that patients have a good
dentition with a minimum of 10 teeth per arch with no teeth mobile or suffering
advanced
periodontal bone loss.
Consultation, examination and, if suitable, provision of an appliance is carried
out over two visits. A pan-oral radiograph is required for the assessment and
should be forwarded with a referral if available. (It would be returned after
use.)
