Janette Mathias - Dental Therapist
Qualifying in 1980 at New Cross Hospital in London, Janette
has a wide experience working in community dental service where
the work included working with Children 0-18 years, children
and adults with special needs, which covers all spectrums e.
g medically compromised, learning difficulties, mental and physical
disabilities, and mental illness. The community dental services
also take a large number of referrals from General Dental Practices
to treat phobic adults and children who require several acclimatisation
visits to the dentist.
Janette enjoys all aspects of her work
but in particular working with dental phobias especially in
children. Janette says ‘Helping
patients overcome their fear of the dentist is one of the most
rewarding
aspects of my job.’
Janette also spent 4 years working
for Unilever in Dental research, developing her scientific
understanding of dentistry and
in particular an understanding on how clinical trials are conducted
and how to evaluate literature effectively. Whilst this was
valuable and enjoyable, Janette missed the hands on clinical
side of being
a Dental Therapist.
There are only a few private practices that
have the valuable services of a therapist to offer their
patients and Janette is
qualified to offer the following services; restorations,
extract baby teeth using local anaesthetic, administer infiltration
and ID blocks, preventative care and advice on topical fluoride,
tooth brushing and diet, fissure sealants, scale and polish,
radiographs and removal of cement after the removal of orthodontic
appliances, taking study models and pulpotomies in baby teeth.
This enhances the dentists’ services at The Dental Spa,
ensuring good access to appointments and full support for the
preventative philosophy of the practice to be truly implemented
effectively.
Janette is in charge of the clinical aspects of
The Spa Kidz Club which is especially designed to promote oral
health education

Janette's reason for enjoying her work at
The Dental Spa is; 'The opportunity to work in a very motivated
team who adopt a
multi disciplinary approach and continually seek to improve
upon current practice. The customer focus and quality of care
is high
and this meets with my own commitment to provide excellent
care to the patients.'
Janette's main interests outside of work are
her family life, travel and staying healthy!
